Overview & Working Principle

The SLYM Machinery underwater hydraulic breaker operates on the same core principle as land-based models—utilizing high-pressure hydraulic oil to drive a reciprocating piston that strikes the chisel at high frequencies. However, marine operations introduce unique structural and environmental challenges.

Our breakers utilize a dual-action cycle combined with a continuous air-supply circuit linked to a surface air compressor. This system equalizes internal and external pressures, preventing water ingress, hydraulic lock, and premature seal failure.

Key Engineering Features

  • Advanced Air-Pressure Compensation: Continuous airflow into the housing creates a positive pressure barrier, blocking water intrusion and clearing out any condensation or minor seepage instantly.

  • Corrosion & Wear Resistance: Manufactured with high-strength alloy steels, reinforced housing shields, and specialized marine-grade surface treatments to resist saltwater corrosion and abrasive silt.

  • Optimized Backpressure Management: Engineered hydraulic circuits accommodate return-line pressure variations, ensuring stable frequency and preventing cavitation in deep-water applications.

  • Heavy-Duty Chisel Integration: Fitted with specialized high-impact chisels designed to fracture high-strength reinforced concrete and hard subsea rock formations effectively.

Critical Operational Guidelines for Maximum Lifespan

  • Pre-Submergence Air Supply (Mandatory): Always start the surface air compressor and establish internal air pressure before or simultaneously as submerging the breaker into the water. Never submerge or operate the unit without active air compensation, as sudden water pressure can instantly ruin internal seals.

  • Strict Blank-Firing (Dry-Firing) Prevention: Avoid empty strikes when the chisel is not firmly engaged against the rock or concrete workpiece to eliminate destructive internal stress waves.

  • Hydraulic Oil & Flow Matching: Ensure your carrier machine's main relief valve and oil flow match the exact specifications listed above to prevent overheating or sluggish impact frequency.

1. How does an underwater hydraulic breaker work, and how is it different from a land-based model?

While both share the same core hydraulic-piston impact mechanism, underwater breakers are specifically engineered to withstand harsh aquatic environments. The primary difference lies in handling extreme external water pressure, backpressure, and liquid ingress. SLYM Machinery underwater breakers feature an advanced compressed air compensation system that continuously injects positive-pressure air into the housing to prevent water flooding and ensure smooth piston operation at depth.

2. Can a standard land-based hydraulic breaker be used underwater?

No, it is strictly not recommended. Standard breakers lack internal air compensation and specialized waterproof/corrosion-resistant seals. Submerging a standard breaker without modification will result in instant water intrusion, hydraulic lock, severe internal corrosion, and immediate equipment failure.

3. Why is pre-submergence air supply mandatory before entering the water?

You must always start the surface air compressor and establish positive internal air pressure before or simultaneously as submerging the breaker. If you submerge the unit without active air compensation, the sudden and massive external water pressure will instantly force water past the seals, damaging internal components.

4. How do I select the right model for my excavator and water depth?

Model selection depends primarily on three factors:

  • Carrier Tonnage: Ensure the breaker's weight matches your excavator or marine piling rig (e.g., 10–20t for small units, 20–35t for medium units, and 35t+ for heavy-duty projects).

  • Hydraulic Flow & Pressure: Verify that your carrier's oil flow and relief valve settings align with the breaker's specifications to prevent overheating or sluggish performance.

  • Water Depth & Compressor Capacity: Deeper water requires higher air compressor output to counteract increased hydrostatic pressure. Contact our engineering team for precise sizing.

5. What maintenance steps are critical for extending the lifespan of a subsea breaker?

  • Air Supply Check: Always verify air compressor operation and pressure levels prior to every subsea deployment.

  • Avoid Blank-Firing: Never trigger the breaker when the chisel is not firmly pressed against the target material to prevent destructive internal shockwaves.

  • Corrosion & Seal Inspection: Regularly inspect marine-grade housing, hydraulic lines, and sealing elements for wear after saltwater or deep-water operations.
