Subsea Air Compressor Guide for Marine Hydraulic Breakers

Why Air Compressors Are Critical for Subsea Hydraulic Breakers

In subsea excavation and rock trenching, hydraulic breakers provide the impact force, but compressed air systems supply the vital life protection.

When operating underwater, seawater creates immense hydrostatic pressure. Without continuous compressed air injected into the breaker's percussion chamber, water quickly enters the cylinder. Because water is incompressible, high-speed piston strikes trigger severe "water hammer" shocks, destroying seals, galling pistons, and allowing salt water to contaminate the hydraulic oil circuit.

A subsea air compressor continuously forces compressed air into the percussion chamber, creating an active air cushion. This positive pressure flushes out moisture, repels seawater, and allows the piston to strike smoothly.

Selecting the Right Air Compressor for Marine Projects

For continuous offshore operations, skid-mounted medium-to-high pressure screw air compressors are the industry standard due to their 100% duty cycle, low maintenance, and high durability in harsh marine environments.

  1. Pressure Calculation:

Compressor working pressure must overcome both hydrostatic water pressure and internal hammer resistance:

P_compressor (MPa) ≥  (H➗100) +  ΔP_hammer + ΔP_friction

Example: At 30 meters depth, hydrostatic pressure is 0.3 MPa. Adding the 0.3 MPa safety margin requires an air compressor delivering at least 0.6 to 0.8 MPa.

  1. Free Air Delivery (Flow Rate):

Standard heavy hydraulic breakers require 4 to 10 m³/min continuous air flow to maintain an effective air barrier against underwater pressure.

Essential Pipeline & Check Valve Guidelines

To prevent catastrophic backflow during operation:

  • Dual Check Valves Near Breaker: Install two stainless-steel spring-assisted check valves in series directly at the breaker's air port. Never place check valves solely on the ship's deck.

  • Rigid Shielding: Transition from flexible umbilical hoses to 316L rigid stainless steel pipes near the hammer body to prevent flying rock damage.

  • Operational Rule: Always turn AIR ON before submerging the hammer, and turn AIR OFF only after the equipment is fully retrieved back on deck.

Environmental & Marine Durability Compliance

For sensitive offshore environments, ensure the system uses Synthetic Ester-based fluids (HEES) compliant with ISO 15380 and EPA VGP standards. SLYM Machinery air compressors are built with heavy-duty C5-M marine anti-corrosion coatings to withstand continuous salt spray exposure.
